Ten years ago now, this week, August of 2009, the Summer I first visited Barcelona, Adam and I made this photo together in Cap De Creus, Catalunya, Spain. The rocks you see disappearing over Adam’s right shoulder into the Mediterranean Sea is where the Pyrenees Mountain range both ends and begins.
The French composer Claude Debussy said that “The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between them.”
Carrying that logic over kinetically gives us something like, “The dance is not in the movements, but in the stillness between them.”
Adam seizes stillness that renders him vanished, I brush up against this disappearance with him when framing the shot, holding my breath, inching closer to le petite mort, we dissolve into the sea, the sea into we.
My wish for those who are confronted with this image is they too will vanish in plain sight when they need to, will gaze long enough into it for it to gaze back into them, a respite that can only truly be achieved with a large format print.
